If you have a 5-8 year old boy on your shopping list, you might know he like Lego, but you might not know what to get him. Don’t fret. The Lego team continues to crank out great products, and this year they have a ton of new games. All of these games have tested very well with the 7-year old boy in my home.
In no particular order, here are my picks for the five best Lego games for 2010:

Lego Creationary (3844)
This is great for the whole family. It’s a Lego board game of pictionary with a lego twist. Children and adults will have a lot of fun playing this together. Just a couple of small caveats … it’s a little tough for some of the younger kids and it can take a while to complete the game.

Lego Minotaurs Game (3841)
If you’re wondering what a Minotaur is, it’s a mythical creature who protects a secret temple that’s hidden deep inside a labyrinth. The first player to lead his or her heroes to the temple is the winner. But to get there, you’ll need to avoid the Minotaur and block your opponents by cleverly placing defensive walls. This is a great game for kids, and for the whole family. The need to think strategically when playing games is a great skill to develop in kids 5-8, and an important component that’s missing in other board games.

Lego Robo Champ (3835)
In this Lego game, the robot factory is having a contest. If you’re the first to build your robot with all the correct color parts, you will win a trophy and be named the Robo Champ. But to get there, you might find that another player takes a part you need and you’ll need to get it back to win. This is a fun and short game (takes about 15 minutes) that’s perfect for 2-3 players.
And one of the coolest aspects of the game is the customizable die, which allows you to change the rules of the game. This is a small, simple game that’s never boring. As often as my kids play it, they keep coming back for more.

LEGO Hogwarts Game (3862)
This is a great game for the boys who are just getting into the Harry Potter books. The premise of the game is that it’s based in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, with secret passages and moving staircases. It’s a challenging place to navigate and the first player that gets through the castle and gathers all of his/her homework is the winner. Also, this is another great family game for 2-4 players.

LEGO Creator: The Race to Build It Board Game
This Lego game has a lot of Legos! It comes with a game board, 49 bricks, 19 special pieces, 4 LEGO Ball Cap Pawns, 20 Model Cards, a six sided die and instruction book. There are 20 different models that boys can build, mostly robots and vehicles. Players race the track and collect the pieces they need to assemble their models. The first player to finish is the winner.
This is a great game, but it can be occasionally frustrating for 4-5 year olds. My advice: if they don’t win, encourage them to finish. My shopping advice: Watch out for sellers on Amazon who are jacking up the price of this game for collectors. You can find a better price in the Amazon Marketplace if you look.
