Angry Birds: Knock On Wood Game Review

Angry Birds: Knock On Wood Game - Christmas Gifts 2011We purchased Angry Birds: Knock On Wood Game so the family could review it, and of course, play with it.

The game is all about building, launching and destroying in the same way the best-selling iPhone and iPad application is. The game features three Angry Birds, green pigs, one slingshot-style launcher, structure pieces and mission cards.

Two or four players play it by drawing a card and building the structure shown before their opponents launch an Angry Bird in an attempt to knock it, and the pigs down to win points. For 2 or 4 players.

Here’s the official product description from Amazon:

Build, launch and destroy with an exciting skill-and-action game based on the best-selling phone app. Game features three Angry Birds, green pigs, one slingshot-style launcher, structure pieces and mission cards. Players draw a card and build the structure shown before their opponents launch an Angry Bird in an attempt to knock it—and the pigs—down to win points. For ages 5 and over.

I think the concept of this toy is really fun, and my kids certainly enjoy it although you need to be prepared to search around for scattered pieces if you don’t have a restricted area for shooting the birds. I find shooting toward a rug or on a table with a tablecloth keeps them from ricocheting all over the room.

Here’s what we like best:

The simple rules are easy to explain to younger children. And for pre-readers, you don’t have to know how to read to figure things out.

It’s sturdy. The pieces — birds, pigs, catapult, and the structure pieces — all seem pretty sturdy. In addition, my six-year old likes to just play with the game pieces as action figures. In fact, we would have bought this game because he wanted some Angry Birds to play with and we didn’t want to buy any more plush.

It helps develop coordination and patience.

Here’s what we like least:

It can be slow. Building the structures can be a challenge. Some of the level one structures are just as difficult as the level two and three structures. In fact, some seem like they’re impossible to build.

Fortunately, my 8-year-old is patient and enjoys this kind of play. The rest of us don’t.

When it comes to shooting birds, that can be tough. It’s even harder than the app, which is actually kind of easy when you get the hang of it

The things we like least, however, are not outweighed by what we like. We really like this game and highly recommend it to our friends and family.

Toys R Us Exclusive: My Keepon

My keepon toy for autistic kidsToys R Us is selling an interesting toy for the holidays called My Keepon.
My Keepon was first developed about seven years ago by Hideki Kozima, a Japanese expert in artificial intelligence and robotics at the School of Project Design at Miyagi University. At the time, Kozima’s theory was that an emotive robot could help autistic kids, who are often overwhelmed in face-to-face interactions, by reducing complex communications to a few simple gestures. When a child pats the robot on the head, My Keepon responds with a playful bob. When a child talks to the robot, it turns to face him and nods.

Here’s what Bloomberg (via MSNBC) had to say about My Keepon:

As robots go, My Keepon appears underwhelming. It stands about 10 inches high and looks like two tennis balls fused together. It has no arms, no antennae, and no laser beams. What it does have is a wicked sense of rhythm. Fire up the stereo and My Keepon starts grinding away, spinning its torso and thumping its head to the beat.

My Keepon also has the backing of one of the world’s largest toy stores, Toys “R” Us, which has the exclusive U.S. rights to sell the robot, originally a therapeutic tool for autistic children. The retailer will begin lining the shelves with My Keepons in late October, priming it to be the big holiday hit. By Christmas, if the bet pays off, My Keepon’s career arc will look a lot like Dr. Phil’s: from therapist to globally recognizable celebrity. “When you see it rocking out, you just can’t help but love it,” says Richard Barry, a vice-president at Toys “R” Us.

The toy has two modes: touch and dance. In touch mode, My Keepon responds to pats with a range of gestures, such as wiggling, turning, or sneezing. Part of the fun comes from uncovering My Keepon’s reactions. Hit it on the head six times, for instance, and it pops up and down six times while emitting a variety of R2-D2-like beeps and boops.

Kids will enjoy the mystery of dance mode, too. A mic in My Keepon’s nose listens to a song — or even a rhythm hummed or whistled — and runs the tempo and amplitude through an algorithm that introduces some randomization.

My Keepon will be available in the United States exclusively through Toys R Us for less than $50. When it’s available, check it out and let me know what you think about it in the comments.

Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar (7958) – 2011 Advent Calendar

If you’ve been reading the blog, you know how crazy I am about finding cool advent calendars for boys and girls.

My kids are at the age where Christmas is still a big deal, and the anticipation of Christmas is an even bigger deal. So for us, a fun advent calendar (or two) can help take the edge off their anticipation.

And even if you’re not thinking of Christmas, and even if you’re still working on your back-to-school shopping, it’s never too early to think about buying your kids’ advent calendars for 2011. In the past few years, Lego has made just enough of these calendars so that they sell out sometime in the early fall. If you procrastinate, you could find yourself without the calendar your kids really want.

This Lego Star Wars calendar is a great choice for boys. While the side of the box states the age range from 6 to 14, I’d guess there are few five-year old boys that wouldn’t like this calendar. I know that my son went through his big Star Wars phase from 5 to 7, and now he seems to be over it. However, he still plays with his Legos on a daily basis and as we checked out the review copy of this, he talked about the cool things he’d do if this was “his” advent calendar this year.

The unique thing about this calendar is “Santa Yoda.” That’s right. Yoda is dressed up in a Santa suit. And it seems that Santa Yoda is only going to be available through this calendar. And that could be good for you, if you’re a collector. Or, if you’re thinking of buying something that you can sell on eBay when your kids are done playing with it, this could be a great advent calendar to buy.

In short, this is Lego, and you can’t go wrong. Your kids are going to love this, and if they don’t, you can certainly sell it to a collector down the road.
